Lake Oswego is located just south of the highly precipitous city of Portland, Oregon, and as a result, experiences similar climate conditions, along with periods of rain and snow. Additionally, while rainfall contributes to the beautiful green landscape in Lake Oswego, the damp climate is the perfect environment for algae, moss, mold and mildew.

Routine OR Roof Repair and Maintenance Saves Money in the Long Run

Hire a qualified roofing contractor in Oregon to perform routine inspection and maintenance in order to maintain the energy efficiency of your Lake Oswego roofing installation. The condition of your Lake Oswego roof directly corresponds to energy costs for heating and cooling your home. Routine OR roof repair will prevent damage to your home insulation and ensure proper ventilation, allowing air to circulate more efficiently.

Regular maintenance also keeps your Lake Oswego roof in tip-top shape. With routine inspections, your roofing contractor in Oregon can detect any leaks and other signs of decay and damage at the onset. Immediate repairs and restoration to the condition of your roof can prevent costlier repairs down the road.

Schedule Routine Maintenance With a Qualified Lake Oswego Roofing Specialist

When it comes to quality OR roof repair, expertise counts. Hire a professional roofing contractor in Oregon with several years of experience in Lake Oswego roofing. Check references thoroughly and verify that sure your prospective contractor is licensed, bonded and insured in the State of Oregon.

Why Would I Consider Installing Roofing Shingles in Cold Weather? - by Steven Briesemeister

December 3, 2010 by Scaffolding Exeter

Unfortunately, your roof won’t usually pick warm and clear days to break, obviously it is much more common for your roof to develop leaks and problems when the rain is beating down and the wind is blowing a gale. Even if the roof does get damaged on a calm day it is really quite unlikely that you will notice until the weather changes. At least without regular maintenance it will be. If you find it absolutely essential when installing roofing shingles in cold weather there are certain things you need to be aware of, although it is always better to fix your roof on a calm day; it may not seem necessary at the time but it is safer for you and your roof.
Installing roofing shingles in cold weather is dangerous.
Going up on your roof in cold weather, especially when there is ice or snow is potentially very dangerous indeed. Any traffic on your roof should be avoided wherever possible because a slippery roof is likely to result in a very serious fall. If you do have to go on the roof to conduct repairs you should always ensure that the roof itself, ladders and any equipment you will be using is dry and safely secured.
You can damage material if installing roofing shingles in cold weather.
Removing ice or snow from the roof can cause serious and irreparable damage to the roof. Scarping away at anything on your roof can easily lead to you removing the protective surface on the shingles, and this surface is the best protection you can get against the elements. It prevents damage to the material itself and ensures that any water will run smoothly off your roof surface without collecting. Removing it means your roof is more prone to leakage. Also, the slightest knock to a freezing cold shingle is likely to break it very easily.
Things to consider when installing roofing shingles in cold weather.
The most important thing to remember in the event that you need to install roofing shingles in cold weather is your personal safety. Traversing a sloping roof in icy conditions is near suicidal and should be avoided at all costs. There is a reason that you can’t get a roofing contractor to come out and fix your roof in these conditions and it isn’t because it’s too cold to work. Snow is no better and even early morning dew can create a very slippery surface that is potentially lethal to anyone trying to walk on the roof. However, if you do need to replace a shingle try to remain on the ladder and be sure to handle the shingles with as much care as possible so that you don’t break them. You will have to manually seal the tabs of the shingles down yourself, because the warmth of the sun normally activates the adhesive strips, but this obviously will not be possible in cold weather.

Why Vented Ridge Metal Roofing? - by Wade Robins

November 30, 2010 by Scaffolding Exeter

When we build the roofs of our houses and buildings, we keep a few things in mind like the strength and durability of the roofs so that in the extreme weather conditions, the roof stays intact and out of any trouble and hence keeps us trouble free and satisfied. There is another thing that needs to be addressed is that our chosen roof does not cause any harm to the rest of the building. Though ordinary metal roofed building can be caused harm due to the extreme weather conditions it faces but that can be prevented by using the vented ridge roofing.
Peace of Mind with Vented Ridge Metal Roofing
Vented ridge metal roofing can help you stay care free from your roof-problems in number of ways. For one, it lets your building roof breath properly due to the vented ridges which results in proper sanitation of the water from your roof. It also protects your roof from other extreme weather conditions like hailstorm, extensive heat, and snow.
Usually vented ridge metal roofing is placed on the top of the roof so that the proper ventilation is ensured but these requirements can change as there might be other requirements for a different type of the building and different structure of the roof.
The vented ridge metal roofing does not absorb the heat in summer as other metal roofs do and in winter it keeps the warmth of the building locked inside the building.
Professional Contractors should be consulted
In order to get the vented ridge metal roofing fitted properly, professional roof-makers and contractors should be hired as they guarantee the quality as well as the accuracy of the work in a delicate job like this which can not be achieved by any homeowner himself. Professional workers can install the ridge vents accurately so the proper amount of air passes through the roof and it stays dry which ultimately results in the increased lifetime of the metal roof.
Check your roof for damage and rust every year and apply non corrosive paint to the roof so that its life is maximized.
As a last word, it should be said that the vented ridge metal roof increases the expected life of the roof having all the qualities in ordinary metal roofs have with their own qualities, which ensures that the home and building owners stay out of trouble for years.

What To Look For In An Estimate Of Roof Repair - by Ronald Fess

November 26, 2010 by Scaffolding Exeter

Getting a roof repaired or replaced is something most of us
homeowners dread, and when the roof does need repair, it is
important to get not only the finest quality materials available but
the best price on installing those materials as well. Most of us will
start the process by getting an estimate of roof repair from a few
local contractors, and it is important for all homeowners to learn
how to read this important document properly.
Of course every estimate of roof repair will look somewhat
different, according to the company who prepared it and the
nature of the job. The estimate for patching a hole, or replacing
a bank of shingles, for instance, can be a fairly simple and
straightforward document, while the estimate for installing or
replacing an entire roof can be quite complex in nature. No
matter what the cost or complexity of the job, however, there
are a number of things to keep in mind when reviewing all those
competing roof repair offers.
Perhaps the most important thing is to make sure that each
estimate of roof repair is bidding on the same job. Before you go
out to get those estimate, it is important to write up the
requirements of the job, including when work must begin, when
the repair needs to be complete, and any preferences you may
have as to roofing materials. Spelling out all these requirements
ahead of time will help you to make sure you are comparing like to
like as you sort out the prices of the various estimates.
It is also important to consider the reputation and reliability of the
roofing contractor. Not all roofing contractors are equally reliable,
nor are all equally skillful and knowledgeable. If you have a
specialty roof, such as a tile roof, a rubber roof or a metal roof, it
is important to choose a contractor who has expertise in that
specialty material. A general roofing contractor may not have all
the skills, tools and expertise needed to complete a complex
repair on the more unconventional roofing materials on the
market.
After you have reviewed all of the roof repair estimates and
narrowed the choices down to just a few, it is a good idea to
take a couple of minutes to chat with each of those candidates.
It is often possible to get a real feel for the quality of the work
someone will do just by meeting with them, and roof repair is no
exception. While the estimate of roof repair can give you an idea
of the price, only a face to face meeting can give you the gut
feeling that can be so important in the world of business and in
the world of roof repair.

What Roofing Contractors Don’t Want You To Know - by Barry Maddox

What Most Roofing Contractors Don’t
Want You To Know…..

If you are one of many homeowners who are thinking about replacing your roof, or know of someone who is, make obsoletely sure the roof needs replaced.

Hello, I’m Barry Maddox owner of Midwest Pro Wash. One of the services we provide is
roof cleaning. Though we are a pressure washing company, we do not pressure wash roofs. Low Pressure Roof Cleaning Is The Answer. We also do something that is unique to the industry: we provide FREE information to you, so you can make an informed and intelligent decision when choosing a contractor. We have dedicated our business to consumer education and service.

What Are The Black Streaks On My Roof?
Unsightly black stains or streaks on asphalt shingles are caused by a hardy type of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma. Some roofing contractors don’t know what these black streaks are. Some say it’s the asphalt showing through the shingles, others say it’s water stains. Some may know it’s algae but tell you that cleaning the roof will damage the shingles. In any case they may tell you that the roof needs replaced. This is not necessarily true, if your shingles are still in good shape. The algae can be killed and removed properly without damaging the shingles using a low pressure chemical application. Never use a pressure washer on an asphalt shingle roof. Using high pressure will blow off the shingle granules lessening the longevity of your roof.

50% of roofs are replaced due to the way they look…
not because of their functionality. Half of the roofs that are replaced in the Midwest don’t need replaced, only cleaned. Roof algae is very common, just like mold and mildew can grow on your vinyl siding, wind blown algae can land on your shingles. The algae feeds on the crushed limestone that is used in asphalt shingles. Rain then spreads the algae down the roof causing unsightly black streaks. Just like your vinyl siding, the roof can be cleaned using proper techniques without causing damage, making your roof look new again.

Roof Cleaning Is Recommended By Shingle Manufactures.
Roofing manufactures like Owens Corning and GAF and the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recommend a low pressure chemical application and a low pressure rinse to clean shingles that have roof algae on them. If your shingles are still in good shape but have roof algae on them, getting your roof cleaned will allow you to get the full life out of your shingles and save you thousands of dollars.

Signs Of Aged Shingles Needing Replaced
We do not recommend cleaning shingles that need replaced. If your not sure if your roof needs replaced or cleaned, here are some signs of an aged roof needing replaced:
*brittle or crumbling shingles
*excessive amount of shingle granules in your gutters
*bottom corners of shingles curled up
*wavy, warped, or humped shingles
*very thin or loose shingles

If you are still unsure if your roof needs cleaned or replaced I recommend calling a reputable roof cleaning company that uses the low pressure technique. Not many roof cleaning companies will clean shingles that need replaced because cleaning the roof won’t make it look new again if the shingles are aged. On the other hand if you call a roofing contractor you may not get the whole truth, and might get persuaded into replacing a roof that only needs cleaned. What is Roof Flashing? - by Steven Briesemeister

November 20, 2010 by Scaffolding Exeter

The flashing on your roof is essentially another shingle but because they are usually found at intersection component parts of your roof where roofs join they are prone to damage and roof leaks caused by bad flashing are a common problem with many roofs. Some of these roof leaks are because the flashing was installed incorrectly while it is quite feasible that the flashing on your roof has been battered and bruised by the elements continually beating, pounding and shining on them. Proper maintenance and early repair are both vital to preventing roof leaks caused by bad flashing.
Flashing installation.
Flashing works in the same way as your shingles do and should overlap the first shingle below. This is so that the water can run down the outside of your roof and not drip down the inside. When flashing becomes damaged or removed you face a very real risk of your roof leaking.
Inspecting your flashing.
Most roof leaks caused by bad flashing can be identified before they occur or at the very least early in their damaging lives. If you have a roof leak you may want to consider checking the flashing yourself or employing a professional roofing contractor to look it over properly. The first step is to look for areas of the flashing that have pulled away from the roof. This will cause cracks in the roof; cracks that water can easily get through and cause damage to your home inside.
Checking your own roof flashing.
If the roofing cement has become damaged or eroded it is vital that you replace it because this will likely be the cause for your flashing coming away from your roof and eventually causing a leak in your roof. If any of the flashing itself is damaged you should also replace this; flashing is made from a number of different materials ranging from sheet metals to rubber. One of the most popular choices at present is aluminum because it is durable, malleable and affordable. If you are in any doubt as to how to apply the roofing cement and flashing yourself then you should pay someone to do this for you because poorly applied it will easily lead to roof leaks caused by bad flashing.
The types of roof flashing.
There are two types of flashing. If you have open valley flashing, the type you can clearly see when looking at the valley where roofs meet, then you can usually check for any damage very easily but if you have closed valley flashing it is virtually impossible to check the condition of it for yourself. Regardless of the type of flashing you have on your roof and whether you believe you can check it yourself or not you should consider using a professional roofing contractor to look at it, and this way you can be absolutely certain whether or not you are likely to suffer from roof leaks caused by bad flashing.

What causes roof to leak? - by John Martino

November 17, 2010 by Scaffolding Exeter

Age: As roofing materials get older they loose their ability to create a weather tight system. Asphalt shingles can get brittle and crack. Built up roofing material also gets brittle and cracks. Wood shingles get worn and can allow water in. The older a roofing system is the higher the probability of leakage can occur.

Installation: Sometimes installation defects occur. Leakage occurs more frequently when a roof system has been installed incorrectly. Some installation defects include exposed fasteners, poor alignment, incorrect roofing material used, and too many layers of roofing material installed.

Manufacturing defects: Defective roofing materials can cause problems with the performance of the roofing system. These defects include cracking or premature aging of the materials.

Flashings: Flashings are arguably the most vulnerable area of the roof surface. Problems with flashings almost always lead to water leakage. Flashings represent an area where there is a seam or interruption in the roof system.

Design: Simple roof structures are less likely to leak then more elaborate roof designs. The more transitions and valleys that a roof has the more vulnerable it is to leakage. There are many more places for water to infiltrate on an elaborate roof then a simple gable roof system.

Weather: The most unpredictable aspect of roof f leakage is the weather. Often, Even a new perfectly designed and installed roof will leak under the right conditions. Sometimes a wind driven rain from an unusual direction can make a roof leak. Sometimes a heavy snow followed by a warming trend can cause a roof to leak.

Typical Causes of Roof Problems - Do You Know These? - by Chris Smitts

November 13, 2010 by Scaffolding Exeter

It is important to deal with these problems as they come up, and therefore we’ve written an article that outlines the main causes of roof decay.

One of the leading typical causes of roof problems is, of course, weather. Since weather plays such a large role in roof decay, we’ve broken it up into several different factors. Rain is possibly the primary aspect to look out for, as it can wear down just about anything, cause rust, and carry debris into gutters and clump it together.

It can also help mold or algae grow. Sun is most harmful immediately after rain, when it causes soaked caulking and other materials to expand and crack. Wind can be dangerous if it blows debris into the roof, or if it is a particularly powerful wind it can actually blow loose shingles off your roof entirely.

Two more of the many typical causes of roof problems are falling debris and accidents. Falling debris can come from trees overhead, taller adjacent buildings (especially in urban areas), be blown by a strong wind, or any number of sources. Debris can crack and damage shingles or other important parts of the roof, and many kinds of debris soak up water, which intensifies any damage.

Accidents include dislodged trees or other large objects that can smack into roofs, or simple carelessness. There are so many different causes for roof problems that many people will tell you just to try and keep it clean and give it a checkup every six months or so.

The fact is that there are so many typical causes of roof problems that it’s relatively impossible to safeguard against them all. The best thing you can do is to keep an eye on your roof and check for signs of weathering and other damage, and to fight them as they come.

Regardless of the type and size or your roof, it will eventually become damaged either by weather or other factors, and parts of it will need to be cleaned, repaired, or replaced. Knowing the kind of damage to expect and how best to deal with that damage is the best way to keep your roof in working condition . . .

Find out more by reading the full article which explains what you need to know about roof maintenance.
